The USA women’s Bueno Cup team (50s) beat Spain 3/0 today. Jenny Klitch started slowly, gathering information about her opponent in the first set before applying it in the next two sets to win 36 64 63. Roz Nideffer lost only two games in her victory at #1 singles. Spain defaulted the doubles point. The USA will play Germany, who edged France 2/1, winning the deciding doubles 75 in the third set!
The USA Women’s 55 team (Connolly Cup) trounced Netherlands 3/0. Vicki Buholz dropped only a game in winning at #2 singles. Tracy Houk, like Klitch, was gathering info in the first set which she dropped 61 to Lisa Prechtel, ranked #2 in the world. After winning the second set 75, Houk ran though the third set 60. Buholz/Judy Newman won the doubles point. The USA finished fifth, having lost to finalist Germany in the round robin portion of the competition.
The USA Women’s 60s (Alice Marble) had the day off and play Great Britain in the final. With Susan Wright and Diane Barker having lost only 4 games in three ties it’s safe to conclude that they are strong favorites to retain the title.
The USA Men’s 50 team (Perry Cup) lost to Argentina 2/1, dropping the doubles in a third set. Rick Leach hurt his knee just a few days prior to the start of this team event which weakened the team. I wish him a speedy recovery. Art Hernandez shown below.
The USA men’s 55 team (Austria Cup) is tied 1/1 with France going into the deciding doubles tomorrow. Bill Moss had an exciting three set win at #2 singles. Ken White dropped the #1 singles. Mike Tammen/Stu Saiki are playing the doubles. Buyckx and Moss shown below.
The USA Men’s 60s, Von Cramm, lost 3/0 to Australia. Wayne Pascoe (AUS) and Ross Persons (USA) had a long hard fought battle before Pascoe prevailed. Glenn Busby buzzed past Max Buycxk at #1 singles and Australia won the doubles in three sets.
Tomorrow the finals are scheduled. The USA women’s 50 & 60 and men’s 55 are still in the hunt for gold while the men’s 60s can take home the bronze. The men’s 50 will be playing the 7/8 playoff.
