USA Advances to Knockout Rounds in Eight Cups (Results for ninth cup TBA)

USA advanced to the knockout rounds in all but the women’s 80s (Doris Hart Cup). Both the men’s and women’s 65s (the Britannia and Kitty Godfree Cups) had to go to the wire to win after winning at #1 singles and losing at #2 singles. The remaining Cup teams won 3/0.

The USA Hart Cup team suffered the loss of its #2 player when she fell and broke her arm yesterday. To compound the team’s woes they had to play indoors on carpet and the mostly Floridian team had some troubles adjusting. It doesn’t get easier when they face #3 seeded Australia tomorrow in the final round robin match.

The USA Queens (75) and Gardnar Mulloy Cups dominated their opponents today. The Queens Cup team plays Germany tomorrow while the Mulloy Cup team has a day off.

The USA Von Cramm (M60), Jack Crawford (M70) and Bitsy Grant (M75) Cup teams all advanced behind strong singles wins. The women’s Althea Gibson Cup team won 3/0 as well. There is not yet a result posted from the women’s 60s. But I assume they won, it’s a very strong team!

It was another rainy day here. Most matches were played indoors, though some of the matches were played on outdoor clay in the early afternoon…then it started to rain again and is very cold. I think the weather may improve soon..hope so!
