USA Teams Win Five of Six Ties on Day 2 in Umag

Day 2 in Croatia

The USA women’s 50s team advanced to the 1-6 playoff with a solid win over Portugal today. Vicki Buholz won 62 64 at #2 singles and Andrea Rice blitzed her opponent 60 60. Rice/Danielle Royston finished the 3/0 sweep with a 64 63 win in doubles.

The USA women’s 55 team won 3/0 with a near perfect win over Denmark. Judy Newman at #2 won 60 60; Jenny Klitch at #1 dropped a single game and Vesna McKenna/Mary Dailey finished the sweep with a 60 61 win in doubles.

The USA Women’s 60s team beat Portugal behind a 60 60 win by Susan Wright at #2 singles; Chandler swept 60 60 at #1 singles and Shannon Gordon-Carney/Wright dropped a mere 2 games in doubles.

Portugal in Red and USA in Navy

The men’s 50s team dropped the #2 singles match to Germany. Brendan Murphy lost 63 61. Curtis Dunn fell in three sets at #1 singles and Kline Sack/Straley dropped the doubles 64 76. Curtis reported that Brendan played through rain delays and he (Curtis) played a German giant and ended the match covered with blood and clay.

The men’s 55s team beat a tough Argentina team. Willie Alumbaugh lost at #2 singles 61 63. Andy Stoner though won 62 62 at #1 singles and Ken White/Leo Young took the doubles point 64 75 to keep the USA with an unblemished record in this division.

The men’s 60s team won 3/0 against Croatia. Mike Fedderly at #2 singles had a tough match, but prevailed 62 26 63; ; Bill Moss at #1 won 62 63 and Stu Saiki/Tammen (corrected) won the doubles point 61 61.
