The USA Althea Gibson Cup (W70) team faced a tough adversary on Day 1, last year’s finalists, Great Britain. Betty Wachob started the team off with a win but Frances Maclennan leveled the tie at a match apiece when she beat Brenda Carter. The Brits, always strong in doubles, beat Carter/Wachob in three sets. The big upset in that division was So Africa over last year’s champions France. Petro Krueger, who spent several weeks in the summer playing tournaments on the red clay of Europe, used that tournament toughness to her advantage, beating Gail Benedetti in singles & then in doubles to lead the upset win.

In the men’s 70s, the Crawford Cup team beat Norway 3/0.

In men’s 75, Grant Cup, the USA blanked Ireland 3/0. In the women’s 75, Queens Cup, the USA blanked So Africa 3/0.

In women’s 80, the Doris Hart Cup, the USA edged Australia 2/1. Carol Wood won at #2 singles, but Burnett Herrick was forced to win a match tiebreak (played only in the 80s in this competition), winning it 10-5 to beat Helen Ferris and secure the win for the USA. Judy Smith/Betty Hill fell in straight sets in the doubles. The men’s 80s, Mulloy Cup, eased past Turkey 3/0.

In the men’s 65, Britannia Cup, the USA beat Ireland 3/0, dropping only five games. However, the women’s 65s, Godfree Cup, showed even less mercy on the host country, Croatia, not allowing them a game during their 3/0 victory.
