Palm Beach Gardens, FL
USA Teams were nine for nine on the first day of play in Boynton Beach, FL today, and did not drop a match in the process (though the women’s 70s came mighty close, only winning 76 in the third albeit against a very tough British team. Wendy McColskey and Tina Karwasky both won in straight sets, though Karwasky had a tough set against Marjorie Love.)
The women’s 65s are at the Club at Quail Ridge and we are all very happy to be playing there. The club is nice, the hydro courts (watered underground) are excellent (thanks Scott!) and the ambiance is great.
Our team, the 65s, won against Portugal with the loss of only three games; I won 60 60; Diane Barker won 62 60 against a good player, Isabel, with a wicked backhand…but Diane has a wicked everything and adjusted and kept attacking; Bunnie Jackson, making her Cup debut and Susan Wright played beautifully, dropping the first game then winning 61 60. After the first set, they accidentally switched receiving sides, realizing it only after the first point of the set and I think played even better on their new formation. We play Austria tomorrow on court 2 at Quail Ridge.

Canada 65s won at #2 singles (Jeanne M) against defending champion France, who played a rookie at #2 singles; Benedict LeGrand saved the day, winning at #1 singles and the doubles (with Caroline Glazmann) against the Canadian 3/4. #3 Germany and #4 Gr. Britain advanced 3/0.

In the W75s, USA beat Argentina 3/0 & W 80s beat Gr Britain 3/0 though they had to overcome a 1-5 deficit in doubles, but then rolled to a 75 61 victory. The women’s 85s were idle but practicing at Quail Ridge today.
The men’s 65 beat Spain 3/0 today…the defending champions are out. The men’s 70s handled Uruguay easily today and take on Gr. Britain tomorrow. The men’s 75 had a tussle with Zimbabwe; Geoff Moore outlasted Hank Irvine 64 67 (8) ret; Michael Beautyman won in straight sets as did Don Long and Les Buck in doubles. They play Switzerland tomorrow. The Men’s 80 beat Canada 3/0 and play France tomorrow. The men’s 85 beat Gr Britain today 3/0 and take on Denmark tomorrow. George McCabe, 90, won doubles with Herm Ahlers; King Van Nostrand won at #1 and Jerald Hayes won at #2.
Great job! Go Team USA…
Thank you!
