The M60 Completed a dream run with a 2/1 win over France, decided by the doubles point. Peter Smith was MVP of the final, winning both #2 singles and combining with Polo Cowan to win the deciding doubles in a match tiebreaker (by a pedestrian score for them of 10-7).

The women’s 55 team beat Italy 3-0 to take home the gold. Julie Cass Cass won a topsy-turvy match at #2 singles 64 1676 to put the team up 1/0. Debbie Nasim clinched the Cup win with a 63 75 defeat of Italy’s #1 player, Isidori. Italy declined to play the doubles.

The women’s 60s team finished with silver medals. They fell 2-1 to the top seeded German team. Vicki Buholz won her match at number one over the defending world champion Helga Nauck, but the German team was too strong in the doubles, winning it in straight sets over Buholz/Prejean to clinch the title for Germany.
The women’s 50 team did not drop a set to France in earning a bronze medal finish. Heather Waters played #2 singles and workhorse #1 Amanda Parson-Siegel won at #1 singles. Isabela Iantosca and Julie Silveira won the doubles point.

The men’s 50s finished 8th, losing 3/0 to Portugal. Art Hernandez at #2 and Sean Straley at #1 both lost tough 3-setters and the USA defaulted the doubles point.
Wonderful! Congrats to all, especially my age-group counterparts in the 60’s Peter Smith, Polo Cowan, Bill Moss and Tom Coulton! World champs has a nice ring to it!
