Last week the USIC (United States, International Club) which was tied with the French IC at 6-6 after the first day of play on Tuesday was up by one match after the day’s singles play10-9.
I won my singles match against Caroline Glazmann. The second set was closer than the score would indicate, but she was a bit rusty.
Erika Smith came down with Covid so we were down to only three women’s players.
In the afternoon we played mixed doubles, and we only needed to win one match to retain the cup since we were the defending champions, if we tied we would retain the cup. However, we swept the mixed doubles.
After the mixed doubles, we had photos with the cup, and there was a cocktail party in the lovely upstairs lounge at NOLTC.
Overall it was a fun few days, and a chance to play some good international tennis in a less pressurized setting and it was nice to have both men and women playing together.
Leora Grimshaw, Tammy Simone and Pancho (Christy Foreman’s widower) and I had a nice dinner 10 minutes from the hotel after the Cup finished. Pancho drove down from NM to watch the last day of play and it was nice to see him.
Many thanks to Bruce Lipka, Charlie Hoeveler, and Erika Smith for all their hard work in making this event fun and well organized for both the American and the French players.
