What is intersectionals?
- Team competition between the USTA sections. There are 17 USTA sectionals but normally around 4-14 compete, depending on the age division. (Hawaii and Caribbean for example rarely do, and Intermountain (Colorado etc) and Southwest are hit and miss.)
- Format for each match tie in the 35/45/55/65 is 3 singles (two out of three full sets) and 2 doubles.
- Format for the competition is a compass draw which results in every team being placed, 1-13 or whatever.
- Smaller draws use round robin formats.
- 75/8/85 have a different format with fewer matches.
- The 55/65 start on Monday and finish on Thursday; the 75/80/85 start on Tuesday and finish on Friday and the 35/45 play Thursday-Sunday.
- Teams are chosen by the sections and the criteria varies from section to section (from turning players away to begging players to compete).
- This is the biggest USTA national women’s tournament of the year.
I am playing for SoCal, we are seeded second in the 65s. We beat New England (Vermont, Massachusetts, etc) today 5/0. Our team (photos tomorrow!) is myself, Tina Karwasky (Captain), Una Davis, Colleen Ferrell, Betsy Kuhle, Kandy Chain and Karen Haas. (Individual match results below).
The SoCal 55s also won 5/0 today but Kathy Settles had to battle for three and a half hours in the heat and humidity to win her match against Middle States (NJ, PA etc). It was a great match. They have the day off today. Kathy just finished winning the mother/son nationals in Wellington yesterday so could use a break. The rest of the SoCal 55s are Kathy Archibald, Kim Kinberg, Jenny Beindorf and Christina Kaus.
The competition is taking place in Plantation, Florida at the Veltri Tennis Center. The weather was warm, humid and surprisingly calm today…but I’m sure the wind will pick up soon.

congrats!what time do the doubles start?
