USTA National Clay Courts, Palm Beach Gardens: Inoue (W40), Buholz/Rens & Jackson/Nichols Win Gold Balls; Finals Saturday for Remaining Divisions

Draws are here (USTA membership needed to view)

Today was advertised to be windy and it was pretty breezy (though I have played at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center in much worse wind), making matches go long and making it more physical than usual.

Jenny Rens, seeded 5 and Simone Vasconcellos, unseeded, reached the 60s singles final, taking quite different paths today to the final. Rens took the scenic route, beating Sweden’s Stina Mosvold (who lives in the Houston area), 46 64 62 in about three hours (her second long match in as many days), while Simone beat Shelly Works 60 61.

Jenny Rens

Rens/Vicki Buholz won the 60 doubles final over Christina Kaus/Mosvold in three sets 46 61 63 in what I was told was a very well-played and competitive final. Susan Love/Michelle Williams won the bronze over Gayle Prejean/Charlotte Hartsock 64 62.

Rens, Buholz, Kaus, Mosvold

Bunnie Jackson, unseeded, reached the 70s singles final, beating Tina Karwasky 67 61 63 (and led 5-0 40-15 in the third set before Tina rallied for a while). I beat Wendy McColskey to advance to the final.

Bunnie and I won the 70 doubles over Andrea Barnes/Leslie Murveit (3) 64 61. We had a lot of good points but the wind was our friend more than theirs. Karwasky/Jan Kirkland (4) edged Betsy Kuhle/Pat Purcell (1) 36 64 64 to take the bronze.

Nichols, Jackson, Murveit, Barnes

Mami Inoue beat Erika Takeuchi 61 64 to win the 40 singles; tomorrow Julie Axelrod/Tara Pressley (unseeded) face #2 Takeuchi/Brandi Bratek in the 40 doubles final; Darice Carneje/Valerie Tan (1) play for 3rd against Gail Gibson/Pam Saffran.

In 50 singles, to no one’s surprise, Julie Thu (1) reached the final over Inese Williamson (3) (the only upset being that she lost a game en route to the final); She plays Tisha Kilburn (2) in the final; Tisha beat #4 Vincenza Massaro in the semis 26 61 60.

In 50 doubles, Heather Waters/Thu (1) beat Sue Kaleel/Kristen Charlton and unseeded Mo Bertsch/Massaro beat Caroline Verhelle/Jennifer Fiers.

Top seeded Sue Kimball will take on unseeded Carolann Castell in the women’s 80s; Kimball beat Char Hillebrand while Lee Delfausse defaulted to Castell (injured).

The five team 80s doubles will finish tomorrow. Both Kimball/Betty Wachob and Castell/Delfausse are undefeated thus far so their match will be the de facto final.
