50/60/70/80 Singles Semis Set in Palm Beach Gardens at National Clay Courts

The 70s singles semis are set: I beat newcomer Kay Reed (a newly retired radiologist who was a good junior player); Wendy McColskey survived Sherri Bronson’s drop shot barrage 63 63; Bunnie Jackson won a three hour plus match against Pat Purcell (who was on court over six hours yesterday) 46 63 61 and Tina Karwasky played impressively to beat Betsy Kuhle 63 62.

Reed/Nichols

In the 60 singles Simone Vasconcellos solved the Susan Boyer puzzle, winning 62 64, using a combination of slices and volleys and keeping the errors low; Stina Mosvold handled Susan Love (who was on court longer even than Purcell yesterday, playing three sets and four hours of singles, then three sets of doubles) 62 61; Vicki Buholz split with Shelly Works, overwhelming her in the first set 61 before Works fought back, winning 61 in the third.; Jenny Rens took on #2 seeded Charlotte Hartsock and won in three sets, and just under four hours.

In the 80s, Lee Delfausse (a former professional skier amongst her many talents) beat Betty Wachob, the #2 seed and faces Carolann Castell in the semis; Sue Kimball beat Elizabeth Barnhill and takes on Charleen Hillebrand (a winner over Sharon Ploor) in the other semi.

The four seeds in the 50s all advanced to the semis; Julie Thu, Inese Williamson, Vincenzo Massaro and Tisha Kilburn all winning in straight sets.

In 70 doubles, Bunnie and I beat #4 seeded Tina Karwasky/Jan Cochran 62 63. Leslie Murveit/Andrea Barnes (3) beat top seeded Betsy Kuhle/Pat Purcell 62 46 62.

The comeback of the day award goes to Christina Kaus/Stina Mosvold (3) who were down 63 5-2 40-30 to Susan Love/Michelle Williams (2) (at which point Kaus hit a winning shank volley winner). Kaus/Mosvold won the final sets 76 61. They play Rens/Buholz who took out #4 Hartsock/Gayle Prejean 60 63 (after leading 5-0 second set).

The top four seeds reached the semis of the 50s; Julie Thu(1) will play Inese Williamson (3) and Tisha Kilburn (2) will face Vincenza Massaro (4).

The 50s doubles semis are also set: Thu/Heather Waters (1) vs Sue Kaleel/Kristen Charlton and Jennifer Fiers/Caroline Verhelle (who upset #2 Darice Carneje/Valerie Tan) vs Mo Bertsch/Massaro.

Mamie Inoue (1) and Erika Takeuchi (2) will play the 40s singles final. The doubles is a round robin which is still ongoing.

In the 80s, Sue Kimball (1) will face Charleen Hillebrand and Carolann Castell faces Lee Delfausse in the other semi. The doubles is a semi.
