King Van Nostrand won the 80 singles over his doubles partner Peter Froelich (AUS) by default (the match was scheduled for tomorrow), but Peter and King won the 80 doubles today McBride/Shears from GBR, the #2 seeds. Interestingly, Van Nostrand/Froelich weren’t seeded, though former world champions, as they hadn’t played much  doubles on the ITF circuit in the past year.

Brenda Carter won both the 70 mixed doubles, with Jerry Thomas, also from USA, and the 70 doubles, with Sue Kimball who was playing her first world championship. Petro Krueger of RSA was her opponent in both matches, in doubles with Heide Orth (GER) and in mixed with GBR’s Michael Hepker.

Burnett Herrick and Judy Smith retained their world doubles championship in women’s 80s. After getting by the touch Canadian team of Inge Weber/Hustwit in the first round in a match tiebreak, they cruised to the gold, beating GBR’s Beeley/Durrans 64 61 to take the gold.

Herrick, W80 and Kimball, W70 won the consolation singles in their respective divisions.

Les Buck/Jody Rush fell in the M70 doubles final to Botolani/Kolacek (SUI).

No Americans are in any other finals, but Canadian Ken Dahl won the men’s 70s over Kolacek and Rosie Asch will go for the 85 singles gold tomorrow. She fell in the final of the mixed today (playing with Lorne Maine), but the Maine household will go home with at least 2 golds, as Lorne won the 85 doubles with Cruchet and Adrianne Avis won the 65 doubles with Wendy Gilchrest; she plays Nora Blom tomorrow for the gold in 65 singles. They have had really close matches twice this year but Blom has come out on top each time.
