The Checket Cup began on February 1st. Thus far, there have been few upsets.
Karen Ann Broe upset Frances O’Sullivan in the women’s 45 singles in the first round 75 61. The remaining seeds have reached the quarters.
There were no upsets in the 55s up to the quarters in singles or doubles, though both Carol Clay, seeded 1 and Judy Louie, seeded 5, needed 3 sets to get past their round of 16 opponents. They face each other in the quarters. Clay and Ellen Goodman also needed 3 sets to get past their first round opponents in doubles.
In the 65s, Louise Stolitsky edged Sheila Weinstock in the first round, then fell in 3 sets to Grace Woo in the round of 16. The remaining 7 seeds reached the semis.
Louise Owen is playing her first tournament since breaking her neck and arm in a bad fall last June. She and Louise Russ went 3 sets in doubles, but prevailed and Owen also won her first round match.
