Cooper Cup Day 2: Into Doubles Final and Singles Semis

Draws are here.

On another gorgeous February day in South Florida, there were quite a few matches to view and play at the Lauderdale Tennis Club.

I played Lou Armstrong in singles, and had some excellent points. After lunch, Susan Wright and I played a Canadian pair, Diane and Lisa. Diane is a former hockey player and volleyball coach and Lisa is French Canadian…both understood the geometry of doubles and moved well but we played well to win. We play Cindy LePrevost/Kerry Young in the final…they beat Susan Wareing/Armstrong 64 76 to reach the final.

I play Suzanne Siegler in the singles semis. Suzanne played a very good match today…rallying from 1-4 0-40 down in the first set to beat Wareing 76 61; at 0-40 she started going for it more and connected more often then not, running her opponent around the court and dropping her more than once. Terri Thyssen plays Lyne Guerer in the other semi.

In the 45s Alison Rovner of NY upset top seeded Eva Koksalova 63 63 in around 2 hours. We were chatting with her after the match (the warm conditions were a challenge for her), but I didn’t realize who she was till I saw the results. She plays Jennifer Fiers from Florida in the final.

In the 55s, Sherrill Colombo won her quarter final match in a match tiebreak (they played a match tiebreak because the other quarterfinal matches in that division had played under that scoring system in that round the day before). She plays #2 seeded Vicki Buholz in the semis tomorrow, and the winner faces Tisha Kilburn who reached the final today, whitewashing Catherine Morgan. Buholz/Wright play the doubles semis tomorrow and possibly the final if they win.

In the 75s, top seeded Tony Novack faces Anne Hill and Gwenda Ward takes on Shula Feuer. In doubles, Cindy Bab/Sue Bramlette take on Donna Fales/Carol Clay. I watched a bit of the Fales/Clay match. Fales was smacking her forehand as well as ever, even in her mid-80s.
