Eoin Collins Defends World Championship in Portugal; Thu Places Second in 50 Singles & American Medalists in Portugal

List of Medalists.

Eoin Collins successfully defended the Men’s 55 World Singles title he earned last year in Mexico City by winning the 55 Singles title in Lisbon (in vastly different conditions) over Enrique Anglada of Chile. Anglada won the first set but won the last two sets 62 60. Dana Gill, Collins teammate during the Austria Cup team competition last week, earned a bronze medal by reaching the semifinals before falling to Anglada.

Julie Thu, the 45s world champion in Tokyo (on hard courts) last year, faced a buzz saw when she faces Barbara Mulej of Slovenia in the final. Mulej was the defending champion and won her sixth world singles title in Portugal, allowing Thu (who reached the final without dropping a set) only a game in the final.

Kline Sack, playing with Frank Vermeer of Netherlands, seeded 8th, reached the Men’s 55 doubles final where they fell to the Chilean team of Gabriel Keymer and Rodrigo Urzua, the 6th seeds, 75 62.

Lindsey Bartlett Montero and her sister Shelly Bartlett earned bronze medals in doubles where they reached the semis as an unseeded team. They lost to the eventual winners, Jurate Hardy/Anke Wurst 75 4-0 retired.

Congratulations to all the champions and medalists!
