FORMER TOURING TENNIS PROFESSIONALS JEFF TARANGO AND ROS NIDEFFER HIGHLIGHT PLAYER FIELDS AT USTA NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Men’s and Women’s National Tournament Will be Played at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Nov. 26–Dec. 2
La Jolla, Calif. – (November 21, 2012) – Former touring tennis professionals Jeff Tarango and Ros Nideffer will highlight exceptional men’s and women’s player fields at the 40th annual United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Men’s and Women’s 40 Hard Court Championships scheduled for Nov. 26 – Dec. 2 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
A former professional touring player on the ATP World Tour, Tarango achieved a career-high singles ranking of 42 in the world during his professional career and captured two ATP singles titles as well as 14 ATP doubles championships. In 1999, the Manhattan Beach, Calif. resident was ranked tenth in the world in doubles.
Tarango is seeded second behind top seed and defending champion Oren Motevassel of Rancho Mirage, Calif., who played for 15 years on the men’s professional tennis and was once ranked as high at 161 in the world before retiring in 2001. A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, Motevassel defeated Tarango in last year’s singles final. A year earlier in 2010, Tarango had beaten Motevassel in the singles final.
A resident of the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, Nideffer played on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour from the late 1970s through late 1990s. A two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist and a two-time French Open doubles champion, Nideffer achieved a career-high singles ranking of 15 in the world in 1990.
Nideffer is seeded second after top-seeded Dina McBride, a former college standout at the University of San Diego in the mid-1990s who reached last year’s singles final. Nideffer and McBride received first-round byes and will play their opening round matches on Tuesday.
“It’s going to be a very entertaining week of tennis,” said Conan Lorenzo, LJBTC Director of Tennis. “I encourage tennis fans who want to watch high-level tennis to come out and enjoy the matches.”
Matches will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 26 and at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27. The women’s singles final is scheduled for Saturday, December 1 and the men’s singles final will be played on Sunday, December 2.
In addition to men’s and women’s singles, there will also be National 40 Hard Court doubles and mixed doubles events. Also on the agenda is the USTA National Father and Son and Grandfather and Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships beginning Friday, November 30, with matches concluding Sunday, December 2.
