  • 2021 ITF Seniors (50-55-60) To Be Held in Umag, Croatia June 6-19, 2021

Posted on November 17, 2020 6:33 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

The 2021 ITF Seniors (50-55-60) World Team & Individual Championships will take place in Umag, Croatia from Sunday 6 June – Saturday 19 June 2021.

From the ITF press release which can be found here.

The International Tennis Federation is pleased to announce that the ITF Seniors (50-55-60) World Team & Individual Championships are now scheduled to be held in Umag, Croatia in June 2021.

The ITF Seniors Committee approved the alternative venue to hold the 50-55-60 World Team Championships from Sunday 6 – Friday 11 June and the 50-55-60 World Individual Championships from Saturday 12 – Saturday 19 June 2021. This follows the decision announced last month that the Championships would not be held as originally scheduled in Boca Raton & Palm Beach Gardens, USA due to the ongoing impact and uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ITF will continue to monitor the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and work closely with tournament hosts and the relevant authorities to prepare for this event. The priority in all decision making will remain the health and safety of participants. Nations and players are also advised to wait until the tournament fact sheet is published, expected in January 2021, before making travel and/or accommodation arrangements.

The full schedule of ITF Seniors World Championships in 2021 is now complete with the Young Seniors World Team & Individual Championships also in Umag from 12-25 September and the ITF Super-Seniors World Team & Individual Championships in Mallorca, Spain from 10-23 October 2021.

Matt Byford, ITF Juniors & Seniors manager said “The ITF is delighted that an alternative host for our Seniors World Championships has been secured so quickly and would like to thank the Croatian Seniors Tennis Association, Croatian Tennis Association, Plava Laguna and the City of Umag for their cooperation. The World Team & Individual Championships are a great highlight of the ITF Seniors calendar and it is fantastic for our playing community that they can now look ahead to June 2021 after the unfortunate cancellation of the event this year.”

  • ITF PLANS FOR RETURN OF SENIOR TENNIS: No Senior Events Will Take Place Before September 1, 2020

Posted on July 22, 2020 6:52 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

    July 22, 2020

The article reads in part: “No firm dates have yet been set for a return to play on the ITF Seniors Tour or the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, but each tour’s committee has decided that there will be no resumption of play on either tour before the week commencing 31 August 2020. ”

“In order to support a safe return to international tennis tournaments, the ITF has devised protocols for all tournament hosts and participants that aim to mitigate the risk of exposure to, and spread of, Covid-19. The protocols will be updated on a regular basis as the global situation regarding Covid-19 continues to change. The protocols can be viewed here:

    Return to Tennis – Participants

Return to Tennis – Tournament Organisers

Any tournament which goes ahead once the tours resume must also follow government requirements, where those requirements go beyond the ITF protocols.

In order to be eligible for addition to the ITF calendar, the following criteria [plus much more] must be met:

“1. Government legislation must permit a tennis event to be held in the host country.

    2. The host nation’s borders must be open to international visitors, giving sufficient and reasonable access to that nation to players, as determined by the ITF.

    3. Each host organizer must, on application to host a tournament, confirm that it will implement the minimum standards set out in the ‘risk mitigation’ section….”

In addition there must be a Covid officer for the tournament.

There is much more information about the duties of both tournament participants and organizers in the above referenced links.

As knowledge of Covid-19 evolves so will the documents attached to the above referenced links.

  • ITF Postpones 2020 Seniors World Championships to 2021; (Young Seniors & Super Seniors Remain on Calendar for Now)

Posted on April 23, 2020 11:25 am by Carolyn Nichols Comment

    23 April 2020

ITF Statement regarding ITF Seniors (50-55-60) World Team & Individual Championships

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ITF has suspended all Tours, including the ITF Seniors Tour until 13 July 2020, aligning with the ATP and WTA Tours respectively. This includes the postponement of the ITF Seniors (50-55-60 years) World Team & Individual Championships which had been scheduled to take place In Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens, USA from 26 April to 9 May 2020.

The ITF has been working with the host organiser, venues, event partners and independent travel advisors in recent weeks to identify a safe and viable date to reschedule the event in 2020. Protecting the health and well-being of players, officials, guests, club members and local communities has remained the priority.

Due to the ongoing global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not been possible to achieve the criteria set for the event to be rescheduled in 2020, and as such the ITF Seniors (50-55-60 years) World Team & Individual Championships will not be held in 2020.

The 2021 ITF Seniors (50-55-60 years) World Team & Individual Championships will therefore take place in Boca Raton & Palm Beach Gardens, with the precise dates to be announced in due course.
The ITF will continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation alongside tournament hosts and partners, with the aim of resuming ITF tournaments as soon as it is safe to do so.

The ITF Young Seniors (35-40-45 years) World Championships scheduled for 13-26 September 2020 in Umag, Croatia and the ITF Super-Seniors (65-70-75-80-85 years) World Championships scheduled for 11- 24 October 2020 in Mallorca, Spain both remain on the 2020 calendar.

If you have any queries, please contact the ITF Seniors Department by email – seniors@itftennis.com

The USTA has posted a link here regarding the postponement to 2021.

  • ITF Cancels All Seniors Events Through August 31, 2020

Posted on March 18, 2020 11:56 am by Carolyn Nichols 3 Comments

    March 18, 2020

Updated April 1, 2020: Events now suspended until July 13, 2020.

Updated May 15, 2020: ITF Cancels all events through July 31, 2020 (including all seniors events).

The ITF today announced that all ITF events, including seniors events, are cancelled until at least June 8, 2020 (now July 13th). Read more here.

Here is the full text of the press release:

    “Statement 18 MAR 2020”

“ALL ITF EVENTS POSTPONED UNTIL 8 JUNE 2020”

“After careful consideration and in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ITF has postponed the ITF World Tennis Tour until Monday 8 June 2020. This aligns with the ATP and WTA’s suspension of their respective tours and the decision by the Fédération Française de Tennis to postpone Roland Garros.

In addition to the suspension of the men’s and women’s ITF World Tennis Tour, the ITF will also postpone the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors, the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, ITF Beach Tennis World Tour, and ITF Seniors Tour until 8 June 2020.

The ITF, ATP and WTA firmly believe it is better for everyone in the tennis community if we work together. We are committed to working through these matters with players, tournaments and our national and regional associations in the weeks and months ahead. More than ever, the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to professional tennis demand collaboration and unity in order for us to do what is right for our fans, players and tournaments.

ITF President David Haggerty said, “In these challenging times, it is more important than ever for our sport to pull together to provide as much certainty as possible to all those affected by these postponements. We recognise the huge impact this will have, but ultimately the health and safety of players, officials and spectators has to be our primary concern. The ITF is committed to taking a responsible approach, working with all tennis stakeholders to enable players of all levels to resume playing as soon as it is safe to do so.”

  • National Clay Courts Day 2: Never in Doubt

Posted on April 10, 2019 5:52 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

It was a long day on the courts in Palm Beach Gardens today at the USTA National Clay Courts/ITF Grade A.

    Day 1 Blog

    Draws/results are here:

I played Carolyn Franca…we knew going in both that Carolyn would win and Carolyn would lose today. I was the victor, rallying from 1-3 in the first to win 63 60. The result first posted online showed Franca winning which resulted in a number texts to one of the other Carolyn’s of “what happened” or “congratulations, great win” till it was sorted out. However, our match was still in the first set when Susan Wright had already finished, even though she played only one more game than us, winning 60 62. The tightest match played in the round of 16 was that between Kim Dean and Bunnie Allare, which went three sets. Allare prevailed. I play Sally Smith tomorrow at 12:30pm EDT.

Our doubles prompted the second part of the headline…we played Vicky and Mary and were winning comfortably, up 5-2, 15-0, serving when it poured for a short while. We resumed 30 or so minutes later and everything changed. We did serve out the set ok, but that was the last bit of comfort we had till the last game of the match…in between…well we went down 4-1, leveled at 4-4, then lost 64…then it was tight in the third till 3-3, when they pulled ahead 5-3. We won the next game at love, then it was my serve…and we went down 15-40. We had a crazy point and Vicky had a chance to put away an overhead (though it was about her 7th one in the point…she was pooped!). Mary missed her return off my serve which could have been outpaced by a balloon punched over the net…then we won the next nine points, and I hit an overhead to finish off the match. Susan held us in…and an “Alexa” tennis joke loosened it up. We play the semis on Friday afternoon.

In the 50s there were a couple of upsets of the #5 seeds; Kristen Kepler beat #5 Daniela Esswein, though since Kepler won the indoors last year it wasn’t a huge upset. Sandy Mills upended #5 Andrea Wohlschlager. Mills takes on #4 Vesna McKenna and Kepler faces #1 Julie Cass.

In the 70s, Gwenda Ward upset #3 Molly Hahn and Barbara Hubbard took out #5 Leslie Pixley.

Roz King withdrew from the women’s 80s with a leg injury allowing Lola O’Sullivan (who won her first round match) to advance to the semis.

In 70 doubles, Vicky McEvoy and Judy Dixon survived the decimation of the seeds; Top seeds Liane Bryson/Kathy Bennett fell to Ann Loose/Gwenda Ward (having an awfully good tournament!); Donna Fales/Betty Wachob upset #4 Goodman/Winstead; and Hahn/Kimball edged Hubbard/Watanabe.

Addendum: Bennett and Bryson retired mid-match vs Loose/Ward; Bennett fell and hurt her right hand/fingers, we wish her a speedy recovery.

The 80 doubles is a round robin…Dori Devries/King barely avoided an upset, edging Sheila Palmer/Ingrid Rehwinkle 64 in the third.

  • Les Grandes Dames Palm Beach Gardens Cat II/ITF Grade I Finished with a Blast of Air

Posted on January 20, 2019 4:14 pm by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

    Fort Lauderdale, FL

I’ll start today’s blog by wishing my dad a happy 94th birthday. He’s a tennis player and when I called to wish him a happy birthday he naturally asked how the tournament went….so this is how it went.

It was WINDY today…the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center is a wonderful public facility but doesn’t have a lot of breaks from the wind. It rained for several hours starting around 7am but stopped about 10…and the wind continued.

I played Diane Barker. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve lost to her over the past 25 or so years and I lost again today but it was a good and long match, 64 76 (3). The first three games of the second set took about 45 minutes! On one point I hit (attempted to hit) a crosscourt forehand and saw the ball change directions 90 degrees in the air and land on the line…and bounce over the side fence! (Diane didn’t win that point). On another, I set up to hit a forehand and I think whiffed when the wind pulled the ball an entirely different direction. Despite these challenges, we had long points and overall the match was of good quality. In the tiebreak Diane tightened up her game and didn’t make an error…too good. (Thanks Brad Sprayberry for the photo below.)

The 3/4 playoff between Kathy Vick and Wendy McColskey was even longer than ours, and was at 5-5 in the third when we finished. McColskey won 75 57 75. Kathy is definitely getting her court time this week, this was her second singles three-setter and she’s had two three-set doubles matches too.

Bunny Allare won the 5-8 playoff group with a 63 76 (8) win over Frances O’Sullivan.

    Suzanne Siegler finished 9th.

In doubles, Ligia Bottinelli and Abi Neuthaler beat Ann Jacobs/Betsy Savitt to claim the title, 76 75. Foulk/Allare beat Vick/Kim Jones to place third.

And that’s a wrap on the first tournament of the year. The odd divisions will be played in February in Fort Lauderdale and the evens will reconvene in Naples at the end of February.

    Draws and results are here.

    Photos are here.

  • There’s Always Doubles!

Posted on August 23, 2018 1:11 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

Today I played Diane Barker and it was a Groundhog Day situation…I keep playing her and the outcome never varies…Diane wins. This time it was 63 61. I played ok but not great (a lot of that had to do with Diane of course) and Diane played well and hit a lot of winners. Regina Marsikova trounced Ros Balodis in the other semi…Marsikova is playing exceptionally well.

Jenny Klitch fell to top seeded Klartje Van Baarle in straight sets. We commiserated…we both tried a lot of things and our opponents countered too well! She and Andrea Rice are in the doubles semis tomorrow.

Jenny Klitch, Vicki Buholz, Andrea Rice: Rain Delay
    Susan Wright, Jenny Cerff

Danny Waldman caused the biggest upset of the day, beating defending champion and top seed Glen Busby (60s) in three sets despite losing the first five games of the match. He’s also in the men’s doubles semis and mixed semis. Mark Vines beat the #2 seed, Pierre Godfroid in three sets as well.

Vicki Buholz and Ross Persons are in the 55 mixed final along with Waldman/Mary Dailey.

Susan Wright/Patricia Medrado won their QF doubles today.

Robin Harris and her partner Steve Myers fell in the semis of the mixed to Medrado/Godfroid in a rain and thunder/lightning storm interrupted match which finished just before dark.

The weather took a big turn in the late afternoon…it’s been quite hot but this afternoon it was cooler and there were some tremendous thunderstorms with lots of lightning. It is going to drop from about 90 to the upper 60s by tomorrow. And there’s a very high chance of rain tomorrow.

    Forecast for tomorrow: 👎🤔💦☔️

We play the doubles semis at 9:30 tomorrow morning and Susan plays third on the court. Diane plays at 10.

I had time today to run errands and arrange for a car for our trip starting Saturday to Austria and Czech Republic.

It’s late…here is a link to the draws.

  • Practice Day: Tennis & Driving

Posted on August 13, 2018 12:41 pm by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

Today, Monday, all of the USA teams were off, after a successful opening day Sunday for all six USA teams.

We were planning on practicing at 3pm till Diane contacted us with the weather forecast which called for rain in the afternoon. She and her husband Jack were going to hit early, and after reviewing the weather forecast, Susan, Pat and I decided to do the same and arrived at 7am. (Jack and Diane were there at 6:30!).

We thought we’d be bumped before 8am but actually were there for nearly two hours, with the three of us rotating serving on one court and drilling/playing points on the other. After we finished, I tried to find ice for my shoulder. I went to both restaurants on site. One gave me three ice cubes and the other two. I did comment on this to someone working  on site and he  arranged for ice to be delivered, which is great. Ice is just not as ubiquitous as it is in the USA.

After practicing we went on a shopping expedition. I wanted to find an O2 store to buy a sim card. I selected the closest one on Google Maps and off we went. We ended up in an area near the Cathedral of Ulm (the tallest in Germany).

The SUV I rented felt like a Winnebago in those narrow, crowded streets. Looking for parking we inadvertently went down such a street not realizing it dead ended into a pedestrian only zone. So I had to back up (after first panicking some). Pat was inside the car looking out and Susan was outside directing me. While I was dithering about backing up, a second delivery van  parked behind me so I had to navigate passing the van on one side without hitting any of the restaurants tables and concrete low planters on the other side. It took quite a while. Eventually I did get out of the alley on one piece and we saw a parking place not too far away. We parked and a few minutes later went to a machine to get the parking pass (which we had to ask for help…it turns out that the fee for an hour was 1,80 but if you put in more than that all your money was returned because no change is given).  Despite paying for the parking we got some sort of ticket! It wasn’t a great driving day, other than we didn’t hit anything or anyone. Here’s a photo of the alley.

It didn’t work out to get a sim card because in Germany you  have to show not only your passport but proof of staying in Germany in writing and the contract we have was at the rental house. However, the trip wasn’t a loss because Susan and Pat both got European travel hair dryers and Pat got a curler, and I got some Think brand shoes! We also hit our fourth grocery store of the trip (we’ve been to Aldi, Lidl and Kaufland), a Rewe which was very nice. I even found the Feld Salat I was looking for (lambs lettuce).

We had a second practice at 3pm and did get in about 45 minutes of doubles before it started to rain. At the first drops, Susan was done (she has gut in her racquets and also has California roots…Californians do not play tennis in the rain! We headed back to the house and had dinner (I cooked, anything to get out of doing dishes!).

Tomorrow we play Argentina, the 8th seeds, for a spot in the semis at 8:30 am…warming up about 7:30am!  They beat Norway today.
