Houston, March 18th, 35s wrapup

Julie Cass had a terrific tournament in Houston. Even though she’s a serve and volleyer, she won the singles and doubles here for the 2nd straight year. She beat Shelly Works in the semis and then took out the 2nd seed, Jessica (Emmonds) Schlotterbach in a terrific final 63 16 63. Michelle King won the bronze with a solid win over Works.

The longest match in this division did involve Works and Sweden’s Suzanne Pettersson. They played for 4.5 hours before Works prevailed in the third set.

Cass and King beat the 4th seeds, Hess/Schaefer in staight sets in the final. Hess/Schaefer took out the 2nd seeds, and last year’s finalists, Kitchen/Phil Palmer in the semis. Schlotterbach/Pettersson won the bronze ball with a long 2 set win over Kitchen/Palmer…lots of long rallies.

Whiting/McWilliams took 5th in the doubles. Lenora Wright took 5th in 35 singles.
