ITF Masters Tennis Individual World Championships Day 4: Into Semis on a Beautiful Day

Today was the warmest yet at the 2022 ITF Masters Tennis Individual World Championships (70ish for a high). I didn’t do much but play and watch tennis. I played Dr. Ulrike Hachmoeller-Eisenbach of Germany (Dr Ulrike for short). I played her in the Mallorca 1000 final last year and we had a long battle, though it was a straight set match. This time our match was about an hour shorter and I won comfortably. After a couple of hours break, Anne Frautschi and I played doubles against an Italian pairing, Paola and Michelina and won 1,2 on a sunny, breezy afternoon. I left the venue after that and changed and came back to watch Anne and Chuck Kuhle play their mixed before stretching and shoulder exercises (and hand laundry…I miss my washing machine!) and just like that the day was over but for dinner.

Susan Wright beat Michelina (Valente), in straight sets and now plays Vladimira Andersson of Sweden, who beat #3 seed Gundi Weiland today. Susan plays tomorrow because Andersson has to leave Thursday and Susan was kind enough to agree to play the semi a day early. Betty Michel, the 4th seed, beat Sabine Schmidt, also unseeded, in a real tussle 36 62 63…and it took Betty eight match points to finish Sabine off…onlookers said the last game lasted about 10 minutes or more!

Carolyn Lane and Heike Deda Kolata, my singles opponent from yesterday, beat an Aussie pairing in straight sets and we play Carolyn & Heike tomorrow morning. It’s supposed to rain in the afternoon, so only consolation, doubles and mixed are scheduled for tomorrow (with the exception of the W65 semis mentioned above).

The American 70s women are doing really well. Una Davis (8) upset the #3 seed, Rheinhilde Adams in three sets and Tina Karwasky, the second seed beat Helene Martin of France to advance to the semis. Una plays Pauline Fisher and Tina plays Sally Van Rensberg (who beat USA’s Betsy Kuhle today). Una and Betsy upset the #2 seeds, 2,1 in doubles (Fisher/Jamison) and Tina and Jan Cochran also reached the doubles semis.

Susan Wright/Paul French and Anne Frautschi/Chuck Kuhle advanced to the 65 mixed quarters where they unfortunately play each other.

In other action, Jimmy Parker (M80s) is rolling on in singles and doubles (with Fred Drilling) & Dean Corley/Jody Rush are also in the M80D semis; Drilling is in the 80 singles semis (plays Peter Adrigan next); Chuck Nelson advanced to the 90 doubles final (and is in the singles semis); Daniel Grossman (70) reached the doubles semis (with Andrew Rae), beating Tom Smith/Danny Carlson USA. Gwenda Ward is in the W75 doubles final. In Mixed 80s it’s an all-American final between Carolann Castell/Drilling and Corley/Andi Polisky. Castell is in the 80 doubles semis too. Nick Ourusoff is in the 85 singles & doubles semis (and lost in the mixed semis).

Brian Millar, CAN continues his fine play in men’s 70s, advancing to the semis. Tim Griffin CAN beat the #2 seed in the men’s 75s today to advance to the semis.

The Gala players’ dinner was tonight poolside. It was very similar to the team dinner, same food, same set up but still very nice. We sat with Carol and William Caldwell from Ireland, who follow this blog. Nice people and lovely accents!
