ITF World Team Championships 50/55, Portugal Day 5: USA Advances to Final in M55; USA Falls 2/1 in W50; W55 Win; M50 Fall 2/1

The USA Men’s 55 beat Netherlands 2/0 behind a three set singles win by Dana Gill at #2 and a straight set win by Eoin Collins at #1 singles. They will play for gold against either Germany, who won a match tiebreak the deciding doubles to advance to the final.

The USA Women’s 50s lost a match tiebreaker in doubles to go down 2/1 to Spain today; Heather Waters had to retire in singles (torn hamstring and meniscus sadly) trailing a set and 3/0; Julie Thu won decisively at #1 singles and Thu/Pernilla Putnik lost the deciding doubles 75 26 10-2; they will play for bronze tomorrow.

The USA Women’s 55 had a great win against France. Gayle Prejean won at #2 in straight sets; Kathy Settles then won a battle against France’s Virginie Buisson in three sets to advance USA to the 5/6 playoff against Spain.

The USA Men’s 55 is tied 1/1 with Great Britain going into the doubles; Tim Burke lost at #2 singles; Willie Dann won at #1 and Dann/Neel Grover lost a heartbreaker, 11-9 in the match tiebreaker of the deciding doubles match. They play Italy (to whom they lost on Day 1) for 7th/8th place tomorrow, Friday.
