Play Heats Up as the Weather Cools Down in La Jolla

The 40 Hard Courts are into the quarters for the men and the semis for the women now. The biggest upset of the day was Dina McBride’s 63 60 upset of #3 seed Amy Alcini, though the first set was closer than the score, the second game lasted 15 minutes! Dina has a great backhand and though not tall, takes the ball early and hits it cleanly and with pace…great overhead too. The remaining seeds are into the semis..Gretchen Magers gave a clinic on the drop shot; Jennifer Dawson and Kim Trang also advanced in straight sets.

In doubles, Debbie Higa showed she’s fully recovered from Monday’s scare (what was in that IV anyway?) and partnering with Jamie Jones, beat Jennifer Lyons/Julie Shapiro yesterday (the 4th seeds) and Jennifer Dawson/Annemarie Brigandi (last year’s finalists) in three sets today to reach the semis. She won her singles too…

On the men’s side, John Saviano upset #5 seed Greg Failla, 26 76 62…Failla served for it in the second set and was a couple of points away before Saviano rallied. Daniel Marting hit the shot of the day against Oren Motevassel, a full stretch lunge volley that cleared the net and bounced back on Marting’s side before Motevassel could reach it.

In the men’s doubles there were a number of upsets. Bill Kellogg/Manuel Ortiz nearly upset the #4 seeds, falling 64 in the third and Bill is 60 this year (but very tough). The #7 and #8 seeds fell today though.
