Rens, Buholz into 60 Singles Final in Canada; Into the 60 Doubles Final in Mont Tremblant

Draws are here.

Vicki Buholz earned raves from the umpires on her play today and Jenny Rens overcame a 4-5 deficit in the first set to win 75 61 in women’s 60s today. The two American friends will play in the final on Saturday.

In Women’s 55 it was an All-Brazilian final, won by top seeded Monica Yanagi over unseeded Simone Ueki. Yanagi had a tussle with Canadian Lucie Lean in the semis, winning in three sets. Rens/Yanagi are in the doubles final against a Canadian pair, Johane Mui/Sylvie Quenneville.

American Gwenda Ward fell in the 65s doubles final with Jeanne Maceachern of Canada, and in the five woman round robin in 75 singles has only dropped a game through her first thee matches…she plays her final match tomorrow. The photo below is from Gwenda’s Facebook page.

Wanda Howes from Australia is in the 65s semis. She “upset” #2 seed Pat Babcock of Canada in the semis and plays top-seeded Maceachern in the final tomorrow. Howes and MJ Pachl of USA will play Vicki and I in the 60s doubles final afterwards. We beat Anabel Andersson/Jany Renaud 60 62 but it was closer than that…they led in most of the games in the second set and we had some amazing rallies! It was a fun match. Towards the end a lot of Canadian supporters arrived and were enthusiastic when the Canadians won points and games, it was a good atmosphere. We won our doubles quarters yesterday too (obviously!) by a similar score.

Canada’s Brian Millar has reached the men’s 70 final and will play France’s Serge Gressy in the final. Gressy beat Andrew Rae in the semis.

Norbert Henn (Germany) rode into the 65s final with a “bicycle” win over Canada’s Alain Gauthier, and faces top-seeded Jamal Skalli (Morocco) (who beat Jon Gerdsen (USA) in the semis) tomorrow in what was a truly international field.

The men’s 85s was another All-American final with Bob Anderman besting Nick Ourusoff in the final.

John Payne, Canada, won the men’s 75s today.

After our doubles match today we stayed to chat and to watch a bit of Polo Cowan/Daniel Grossman (USA) play Canadians Andre Lambert/Christian Laurin in the Men’s 60 doubles semis. Polo played amazingly, and Daniel was steady but they fell 10-7 in the match tiebreak. Daniel won the men’s 70 doubles with Rae earlier against Sydney Azancot (CAN) and Galba Couto (BRA).
