Texas, SoCal take 45, 35 Titles at Intersectionals

NorCal played Florida in the 3-4 playoff and played their best matches of the week. Nichols beat Myke Bodisch 63 76(3) ; Airola-Murveit played great to beat the always tough Frances O’Sullivan 62 62 and Cooke used her all court game and great returns to beat Susie Brown 62 63. Lackey/Johnson, playing #1 doubles, beat Bodisch/O’Sullivan  and Cooke/Ramsower-Pearlstein beat Brown/Tracy Viebrock, both in straight sets.

Texas upset Southern 3-2 in the final to score their first win over Southern in many years. Southern took an early lead in the final, with Fishburne beating Williams at #2 singles in straight sets. Fran Chandler and Vick played for nearly four hours before Chandler finally won the third set 61. Interestingly, Vick said the reason she won the 2nd set was because she came to net; Chandler said she came to net more in the 3rd set (otherwise they might still be playing). Whiting kept Texas alive by scoring a 62 64 win over Sue Bartlett. Texas then swept the doubles, with McWilliams/Whiting beating Rita Anderson/Fishburne and Vick/Williams sealing the win over Chandler/Becky Holland.
