Our team, USA W65, Kitty Godfree Cup, beat Germany today 3/0 and everyone played great! I beat Karin Plaggenborg 60 61, but the second set was tougher than the score…Karin hit some great serves and backhands..and moved very well. Diane Barker didn’t give Sabine Schmidt much room to breathe, winning 62 60 behind a barrage of blistering groundstrokes. Bunnie Jackson/Susan Wright played brilliant doubles, beating Plaggenborg/Maggie Beyer 60 62…on match point Susan hit a ball so hard it nearly drilled a hole in Maggie (but she avoided the hit).

After our team finished we watched our friend Jenny Cerff from So Africa finish off a marathon win over Sylvia Kronenburg, 36 60 76 (12) on her 7th match point (Jenny led 62 in the tiebreak before Sylvia fought back). That clinched the win for So Africa, who advance now to the 5/6 playoff against Canada.

Jenny and Sylvia; an exhausted but happy Jenny!

That match finished we turned out attention to France (2) vs Great Britain (4). France easily won at #2 singles (Benedicte LeGrand beat Jane Rushby 61 63), but at #1, Great Britain (Ann Clark) ousted France (Caroline Glaszmann) 63 16 61. Great Britain (Clark and Pat Wire), aside from a blip at 52 (losing 2 games and going down a game point at 54) played great to win over France (LeGrand/Glaszmann) 64 60.

In the W70s, Althea Gibson Cup, the USA lost only four games in beating Canada 3/0 behind the singles play of Wendy McColskey at #2, Tina Karwasky at #1 and Judy Dixon/Toni Novack in doubles. They play Great Britain, a 3/0 winner over #2 seeded Germany. Notably, Marjorie Love of GBR beat the 2021 world champion Reinhilde Adams in two tight sets. Pauline Fisher won at #2 singles.

In W75, USA suffered its first loss of the competition, losing 2/1 to top-seeded France in a match that went down to the third set of doubles. Betty Wachob won over Michelle Bichon at #2; Sue Kimball lost to Gail Benedetti in straight sets and Wachob/Carolann Castell fell to Benedetti/Lawrence Goulard in three sets. Great effort! They play Great Britain next. They are in a three team round robin for the Cup so still have an outside chance for gold depending on the remaining two matches.

The Women’s 80/85 and Men’s 65/85 did not play on Wednesday.

The Men’s 70, Jack Crawford Cup team beat Italy 2/1, winning both singles. (Litwin and Sivertson).

The Men’s 75 also beat Italy, 3/0, not dropping a set; Geoff Moore at #2, Michael Beautyman at #1 and Les Buck/Don Long in doubles.

The USA Men’s 80s, Gardnar Mulloy Cup, beat Italy also! 3/0 behind the singles play of #2 Michael Stewart, #1 Fred Drilling and Drilling/Ivo Barbic in doubles.
