Donna Fales was once again the heroine of the W85s, this time with Sheila Palmer in the #2 slot in singles and by her side in doubles. Sheila lost her #2 singles match but Donna won at Line #1 and Donna/Sheila won the deciding doubles decisively..no match tiebreak required!
In M85, it was a team effort to beat Chilean Jaime Pinto Bravo (who looks and plays as if at least a decade younger). Jimmy Washington was up 61 50 against his Chilean opponent when Pedro Solis retired; Pinto Bravo took care of Bob Quall with ease and Jerald Hayes/Wilbur Jones won the doubles point (over the two singles opponents 62 75. Solis recovered well from what ailed him…though he did retire three matches in a row so maybe he’s just not a singles player).)
The Women’s 75 had another heartbreaking loss…Liane Bryson fell at #2 singles; Gwenda Ward beat former world #1 and world champion Marjorie Love in three sets but Liane and Ann Stanley lost the doubles 10-5 in the match tiebreak. The team will finish third most likely.
The Men’s 75 David Fish and Dave Sivertson won their singles in straight sets against Italy but narrowly lost the doubles point to make it 2/1 and put the USA into the 5/6 playoff.
