USTA National Women’s 40-80 Clay Courts, Palm Beach Gardens Day 2

Draws are here.

It was another warm and lovely day in Palm Beach Gardens and there were a lot of competitive matches.

Susan Love outlasted Sylvia Kodsi in a hard hitting 60s match which lasted around four hours, 57, 63 63. Sylvia, from NY recently retired and is a very good player. Love had a very long doubles match, playing with Michelle Williams, after her singles. They ousted Stacey Williams/Mariana Hollman, 57 63 64, rallying from 1/4 down in the third to do so.

There was only one upset in the 60s; Simone Vasconcellos advanced when #5 Christina Kaus retired at 5-5 with illness; Charlotte Hartsock (2) beat Daniella Esswein 62 64; Shelly Works (5) dropped the first set to lefty serve and volleyer Lori Robertson but rallied to win the final two sets (26 62 62), hitting deeper in the final sets; Vicki Buholz moved past Gayle Prejean impressively, 62 62; Susan Boyer (4)out rallied Michelle Williams 63 75; Stina Mosvold (3) beat Ellen Markowitz 1,3 and Jenny Rens (5) beat Catherine Morgan in her clay court singles debut.

In 60 doubles the four seeds are in the semis: Buholz/Rens (1), Hartsock/Prejean (4) and Kaus/Mosvold all reached the semis with the total loss of 5 games.

In the 70s, the match of the day was Pat Purcell’s (3) four hour win, 76 in the third, over Kathy Foulk 64 57 76. Pat had about a gallon of pickle juice with her after the match, to calm down her cramping (it was warm today). The two then had to play against each other in doubles, Pat with Betsy Kuhle and Kathy with Betsy Savitt; Kuhle/Purcell (1) won 62 75. Wendy McColskey (4) won her tough first round of singles against Una Davis 76 (5) 62 but fell (with her sister Dale) in the doubles 64 63 to Andrea Barnes/Leslie Murveit. Murveit lost to Tina Karwasky (2) in singles and Bunnie Jackson played a near perfect match to beat Barnes in straight sets. Other winners were myself, Sherri Bronson and Katherine Reed. I play Reed tomorrow while Bronson plays McColskey. Karwasky faces Kuhle and Jackson plays Purcell.

The 50s started today; Polly Clark edged Catherine Morgan 63 in the third; Jen Beindorf edged Jennifer Fiers 76 62; the remaining matches were lopsided.

In the 40s the singles semis will take place tomorrow.

In the 80s, Lee Delfausse and Sharon Ploor had to go 3 sets to advance. Sue Kimball (1) and Betty Wachob (2) start play tomorrow.

The 80 doubles is a round robin of five teams.

The annual NWTO meeting was held at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center at 5pm and Kathy Settles and Liane Bryson were elected co-presidents. See photos above to access some surveys which will help tournaments and the players.
