The Crawford Cup began today in Fort Lauderdale. It’s a Super Category II USTA tournament, the grade just below our national championships. We are playing on green clay. There are lot of Canadian “snowbirds” here in addition to players from around the USA.
Most seeds weren’t in action but there were a few seeds who played doubles. In the 55s, the unseeded team of Birgette Hostrop and Katherine Zanon upset #3 seeded Lil Peltz-Petow and Jan Kirkland Cochran in three sets. Brenda Winstead and Diana Kitt upset the 3rd seeds in the 65s.
Tomorrow all surviving seeds are in action in the 55, 65, 75 and 85s and the 45s start play. The 35s begin play on Friday.
It rained on and off today but not too hard till after all play was completed. Above is a photo of the rain coming down in full sunshine. I play at 9 and doubles with Pam Cooke at one.
