The Althea Gibson Cup team played Spain today on a hot and steamy day. We began at 11am (though we thought we were starting at 10am till around 7:30 am!). Tina played #2 singles and beat Encarnita Ruiz 63 62; I played #1 and beat Carmen Chillida 61 60 and Betsy Kuhle and Pat Purcell played the doubles point. They started brilliantly against Carmen and Monica Alvarez, winning the first set 6-1 and had a match point at 5/4 in the second set before falling 16 75 (10-5) in a match that featured many great points. USA won 2/1. We face #3 seeded Great Britain in the last round robin match tomorrow at Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center and play on Court 1.

The Women’s 60s team had a very long day at the office, longer for some than others! Jenny Klitch at #1 finished off her Canadian opponent 60 62; Christina Kaus/Jenny Rens won the doubles point; then Rens won at #2 singles vs So Africa (Jenny Cerff); Klitch won against a very hard hitting opponent at #1 singles; and Vicki Buholz/Kaus finished off a successful albeit long day at the office. They play Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

The Men’s 65s and 70s both won 3/0. The Men’s 60s lost 2/1 to Mexico and may have had a second match after playing 1/2 of the #2 singles, the entire #1 singles, and doubles to finish off a rain delayed match from Monday.

Congrats USA Teams! Keep up the good work and have fun along the way, like it seems you are doing.
